What is Amla?
Amla is a deciduous tree that grows up to 20 to 30 feet high. Its botanical name is Phyllanthus emblica or Emblica officinalis. The tree is usually found in India and Nepal and this is why it is often referred to as the Indian or Nepalese gooseberry. The word “amla” is derived from the Sanskrit word “amlaki”. The tree is best known for its round, small and green fruit. The fruit has a sour and bitter taste. Except for the seed, all parts of the Amla fruit are edible.
Amla, is known for its ability to rejuvenate the body or enable the body’s maximum potential, consistent with its classification as a “rasayana” herb in the Ayurvedic tradition. According to Ayurveda, Amla may be used as a rasayana (rejuvenative) to promote longevity and has traditionally been used to support digestion, heart health, healthy vision, hair growth, and enliven the body. Its antioxidant properties help fight free radical damage and support healthy aging.
This superfruit protects against an impressive list of ailments, many of which are degenerative. The berry is also famous as a potent beauty elixir for its role in reducing hair loss and graying, as well as smoothing wrinkles and fortifying the skin. A veritable ‘Fountain of Youth,’ Amla can help keep you vibrant and disease-free.
With a distinctive sour taste, Amla is generally consumed for its therapeutic value. As one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, it’s traditionally been used to tame inflammation, boost the immune system, slow the aging process and increase longevity. Amla is said to have a cooling effect on the body, improve liver function and encourage weight loss. Modern research has also found the berry to be an exceptionally protective food. What’s more, Amla is nutrient rich and contains remarkable levels of vitamins A, B and C, calcium, chromium, manganese, phosphorus and iron. It’s also an excellent source of the antioxidants ellagic and gallic acid, along with quercetin and corilagin.

Research done by the faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Nagasaki University showed that the fruit’s extract had the potential to prevent cancer by helping the body fight the harmful effects of chemicals that are carcinogenic and inhibit the further growth of affected cells. According to the study, it showed maximum action on the cells of the stomach, skin and uterus. Indian gooseberry has undergone preliminary research, demonstrating in vitro antiviral and antimicrobial properties.
Amla is rich in antioxidants which help in restricting the growth of carcinogenic cells. It helps in keeping harmful free radicals at bay. Antioxidants in Amla can even counterattack the side effects of anti-cancer drugs. Stomach, skin and liver cancers can be prevented by taking Amla regularly. Apart from this, Amla extract can reduce the harmful effects of radiation and chemotherapy without reducing their beneficial effects as an anti-cancer treatment. Some studies also declared that Amla is almost as good as the chemo.
Reports also have shown that the humble green berry is highly effective in preventing the growth of cancerous cells, thereby protecting you from potential danger. Amla is good in oxygen content. If it is consumed regularly the oxygen in the body will be increased and in turn it weakens the cancer cells and finally the cancer cells will be killed.
