Ellagic Acid – This Antioxidant Can KILL Cancer Cells


Ellagic Acid contains a naturally occurring phenolic compound that has very strong anti-oxidant properties. It is a potent anti-carcinogen. Ellagic Acid has the ability to inhibit mutations within a cell’s DNA. It is also considered to be a cancer inhibitor which has the ability to restore apoptosis or normal cell death in cancer cells. In addition, research has found it to be antibacterial and anti-viral.

Healthy Cells vs Cancer Cells

Your body has the ability to dissolve cancerous and precancerous cells within a few days, and to replace them with young and healthy cells – without the harsh killer tools of toxic chemicals, scalpels and radiation. Science has proven that free radicals are responsible for mutated cell growth. This causes much ill health, from common symptoms of aging as well as potentially terminal cancerous diseases.

The cells in your body are naturally in a continual cycle of birth (replication) and death (apoptosis). Your body controls replication to ensure no mistakes (cancerous mutations) occur prior to cell division. If mutations are detected, the cell is instructed to die or not reproduce, thus protecting you from cancerous growths. When cells ignore the signals to die (apoptosis), they become virtually immortal, reproducing indefinitely, while abandoning their intended function and then they grow as a tumor.

When cancer cells divide, the original cell does not die – they rapidly multiply by cell division (mitosis), making 2 cancer cells, then 4, 8, 16, 32 and so on. What was found during research (see below) is that in both lab and clinical studies, red raspberry ellagitannins caused cancer cells to go through a nontoxic, normal apoptosis (cell death) process without damaging the healthy cells.

Chemotherapy and radiation do the same thing – kill cancer cells, that is. But they have a devastating side effect that does not happen with the ellagitannins – they kill healthy cells too destroying the immune system in the process. More people probably die from the side effects of chemo and radiation than actually die from the original cancer.

The Research

Although some of the early published research on Ellagic Acid appeared in the 1970’s and 1980’s, we owe most of our current knowledge about Ellagic Acid and it’s use in cancer prevention to studies done at the University of Minnesota School of Nutrition Sciences, and more recently to research conducted by Dr. Daniel Nixon. Dr. Nixon is the President of the American Health Foundation, a professor of Folk Medicine, and a Professor of Hematology and Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is currently using Ellagic Acid in his cancer research at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Institute.

The Hollings Cancer Institute at the University of South Carolina is doing a double blind study on a large group of 500 cervical cancer patients that has everyone excited. Nine years of study have shown that a natural product called ellagic acid (consuming the equivalent of 40 milligrams of Ellagic Acid from red raspberries) is causing G-arrest within 48 hours (inhibiting and stopping mitosis-cancer cell division), and apoptosis (normal cell death) within 72 hours, for breast, pancreas, esophageal, skin, colon and prostate cancer cells. Human cervical cancer cells, which are infected with the human papilloma virus (HPV) will die a normal cell death within several days.

Clinical tests also show that ellagic acid prevents the destruction of the p53 gene by cancer cells. Additional studies suggest that one of the mechanisms by which ellagic acid inhibits mutagenesis and carcinogenesis is by forming adducts with DNA, thus masking binding sites to be occupied by the mutagen or carcinogen.

Ellagic acid stimulates the immune system to destroy cancerous cells. It may be useful in reducing the incidence of birth defects, may slow the spread of the HIV virus in the body, may prevent periodontal disease and diabetic retinopathy. It can slow the aging process and promote wound healing. Ellagic acid may help prevent heart disease because of the presence of a natural form of aspirin called salicylate.

Dr. Nixon’s Published Results Showed:

· Consuming one cup of red raspberries per day (40 mg of ellagitannins) prevents the development of cancer cells. At low concentrations, it slows the growth of cancer cells; at higher concentrations, it tells cancer cells to kill themselves. For example, cells infected with the human papilloma virus (which is linked to cervical cancer), when exposed to ellagic acid experienced apoptosis, or normal cell death.

· Red raspberry ellagitannins slow the growth of abnormal colon cells in humans.

· Tests reveal similar results for breast, pancreas, esophageal, skin, and prostate cancer cells. The ellagitannins also produce a breakdown in human leukemia cells.

· Another way that ellagitannins protect your body is through G-Arrest which means that the ellagitannins stop cells from mutating in the first place. If cells don’t mutate, then we don’t get cancer. This is very important when you understand that that every single day of your life you produce anywhere from a few hundred to as many as 10,000 cancerous cells in your body as part of your normal metabolism. In tests conducted by the Hollings Cancer Institute with Ellagic Acid, G-Arrest began in 72 hours in both breast and cervical cancer.

· Red raspberry ellagitannins prevent destruction of the P53 gene by cancer cells. P53 prevents mutagenic activity in cervical cells.

· Red raspberry ellagitannins protect human cells against cancer-causing agents in tobacco smoke, food additives, and petroleum-based substances. Ellagitannins act as scavengers to “bind” cancer-causing chemicals, making them inactive. The ellagitannins inhibit the ability of other chemicals to cause mutations in bacteria. Red Raspberry ellagitannins also protect DNA by blocking carcinogens from binding to the DNA.

· European medical studies also demonstrate that red raspberry ellagitannins lower the incidence of birth defects, promote wound healing, reduce heart disease, and may reduce or reverse chemically induced liver fibrosis. In addition, the ellagic acid produced from the ellagitannins has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties
