Earthing, also known as grounding, is based on research that demonstrates that connecting to Earth’s electrical energy promotes physical well being. The act of Earthing refers to a physical connection between the electrical frequencies of the human body with that of Earth’s (think barefoot in the grass, or at the beach). Just like the sun constantly provides us with energy and vitamins, the earth too is a source of subtle energy that contributes to optimum health.
Up until a few hundred years ago, our ancestors lived in direct contact with the Earth’s surface. They walked barefoot upon the ground, slept close to the earth, or perhaps were separated only by the thinnest of animal skins and plant based bedding materials. Our ancestors were constantly grounded, and lived in intimate contact with the earth. In China, the ancient Daoist yogis intuitively felt that the earth possessed energy, called earth “chi”. In many places the chi was strong – near flowing water, ocean beaches, in the rocks and it was easily absorbed through the soles of our feet.
Today, we have adopted a very different lifestyle from our ancient forbearers; we wear shoes with rubber soles and sleep in beds and houses that are insulated from the ground. We also experience diseases and maladies that were very rare for our ancestors. Is there a correlation? Could cutting ourselves off from the surface of our planet somehow be a cause or a contributor to many of our modern ailments? If there is such a thing as earth chi, are we chronically deficient?
Connection with the Earth restores a lost electrical signal to the body that seems to stabilize the complicated circuitry of our essentially-electrical body. Our built-in self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms become more effective. There are head-to-toe improvements such as better blood flow, less pain and inflammation, more energy and deeper sleep. For many people the effect is dramatic, like charging a failing battery. For others, the effect is gradual and subtle.
Just as the sun gives us warmth and vitamin D, the Earth underfoot gives us food and water, a surface to walk, sit, stand, play, and build on, and something you never, ever thought about—an eternal, natural, and gentle energy. Think of it perhaps as vitamin G—G for ground. What does that mean to you? Maybe the difference between feeling good and not so good, of having little or a lot of energy, or sleeping well or not so well.
Studies now show that just standing on the earth barefoot has amazing health benefits as we drain off free-radicals and the electric charge we carry with us. Think of it this way. The earth is a giant car battery with a liquid metal core. It carries a strongly negative charge. And anything above the ground (such as in the air or insulated from the ground) carries a positive charge. This is why lightning strikes occur, and why we need to “ground” or protect all of our electrical and electronic equipment, to keep them from sparking or short circuiting.
In essence, to ground something is to plug it back in to the earth, which is actually the third prong on our electrical outlets (called a ground). Human beings, and all organisms for that matter, are electrical in nature as well. We get EKG’s, MRI’s, and all sorts of electrical tests to measure our health, hearts, and bodies; our nervous system works on electrical impulses, and even the heart beats with an electrical charge (which is why you may get a pacemaker if it starts getting out of tune).
We are electrical in nature, and like electrical equipment and electronics needs to be properly grounded to function well (if you’ve ever listened to an ungrounded radio you know what I mean, you’ll hear tons of static and background noise until it’s grounded), we need to be grounded for proper health and well-being and for proper functioning of our bodies.
Why is this so important? Electrons are the “object of affection,” so to speak, of positively charged free radicals, the biochemical agents that cause oxidation in the body. Electrons are the source of antioxidant power. We believe this influx of electrons from the ground serves to potently neutralize or quench free radicals that would otherwise steal electrons from healthy tissue, activity resulting in tissue damage and chronic inflammation at the basis of many common and serious diseases.
Earthing is nothing really new, it’s purely old age, a revival of a timeless and forgotten law of Nature – that we belong to Nature, and part of the very connection with Nature is the connection with Mother Earth under our feet.
Earthing is among the most natural and safest things you can do. The eternal ground energy feeds and nurtures living things – plant and animal life – that have their roots and body parts in direct contact with the land and the sea. But we are disconnected from this energy. We live on the planet but are not in direct physical contact with it.

Is there a connection between the dis-connect with the Earth and the increasing un-wellness of the Earth’s population? The Earthing experience, now on a worldwide scale, strongly indicates that indeed there is, and that reconnection with the Earth holds great promise for our increasingly sick world. For years now, many people around the world – men, women, and children alike – have reconnected with the Earth on a routine basis and report that they sleep better, have less pain and stress, and experience faster recovery from trauma.
Ongoing scientific research is now discovering the details as to why many people feel significantly better when they make physical contact with the planet’s omnipresent energy field right under our nose. By scientific standards, Earthing research is in an early stage, but clearly represents a new and exciting frontier of exploration. The research, in fact, indicates that reconnecting to the Earth may be a missing link in the health equation along with good food and water, sunshine, physical activity, and minimizing stress.
During the 1960s & 70s, researchers at Germany’s Max Planck Institute isolated volunteers in underground rooms that were electrically shielded from Earth’s electric field. All study participants developed abnormal physiological patterns including: chaotic hormonal production, disturbed sleep patterns and a general disruption of basic body regulation.
The same study also reported numerous positive results including the following amongst others:
· Improved sleep
· Decreased pain and inflammation
· Reduced feelings of stress
· Improvements in gastrointestinal symptoms
Evidence suggests that negative-charged free electrons on Earth’s surface are responsible for bringing the electric energy levels of the human body in accordance with that of the earth which in turn promotes overall health and vitality.
Although the science of Earthing is a relatively new field, more and more evidence suggests that suffusing the body with negative electrons produces virtually immediate positive results such as equalizing energy levels, synchronizing hormonal cycles and establishing proper physiological rhythms.
Is Earthing The Holy Grail of Medicine?
A key factor that has medical professionals intrigued is Earthing’s reported effects on inflammation. Currently, inflammation is linked to nearly eighty chronic illnesses including major diseases like cancer and type 2 Diabetes. Dr. William Meggs from East Carolina University claims that ‘inflammation may turn out to be the elusive Holy Grail of medicine – the single phenomenon that holds the key to sickness and health.’
Although science continues to play a game of catch up with nature, Earthing seems to be a valid and definitely low-maintenance approach toward living a healthy lifestyle. If possible, simply find a patch of earth, kick off your shoes and spend some time in contact with the Earth. Even 20-30 minutes can make a remarkable difference.
