The Dangers of Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

  • A March 2022 study shows a link between artificial sweeteners and cancer, even after controlling for factors known to contribute to cancer, including age, weight gain, physical activity and family history of cancer.
  • Artificial sweeteners are commonly found in diet and low-calorie foods. However, they are also found in foods that you may have thought were either sweetened with sugar or not sweetened at all, such as bread, Pedialyte, Greek yogurt, granola cereal, non-diet ginger ale and microwave kettle popcorn.
  • Evidence suggests that artificial sweeteners also trigger beneficial bacteria to become pathogenic, lower the number of gut bacteria and raise the risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
  • Artificial sweeteners not only are linked to neurobehavioral changes, depression, headache, poor mood, but also could trigger seizures. Although manufacturers use the lure of low or no calories, the sweeteners may promote weight gain and can harm your health.

Millions of Americans gobble down diet sodas, artificial sweeteners and thousands of other products that contain huge amounts of aspartame and never even imagine that they could literally be destroying their health.  Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist for G.D. Searle & Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.  It is the most common sweetening additive being used in over 6,000 consumer foods, beverages, multivitamins, frozen desserts, cereals, pharmaceutical products, and artificial sweeteners sold worldwide.

A study published on March 24/2022 supports past research that shows artificial sweeteners can increase your risk of cancer. Many people make the mistake of believing that since artificially sweetened products have fewer calories and no sugar, they, therefore, must be healthier.

Yet, there is mounting evidence that the rising rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease are linked to consuming food products with artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners became more popular after thousands of studies over many decades showed that sugar damages your health.

As the sugar industry has successfully manipulated the evidence and misdirected the public, it also created a demand for artificial sweeteners with zero calories.

Sugar-sweetened beverages are the leading source of added sugar in the U.S., estimated to account for 341.1 calories from drinks in an adult’s diet and 312.6 calories in a child’s diet every single day.

Despite this damaging evidence, sales have continued to rise, from $314.4 million in 2013 to $414.8 million in 2021.

This offers further evidence of both the addictive quality of sugar and artificially sweetened food and drink and the effectiveness of the sugar industry’s ability to hide the evidence.

One thing that many Americans do not realize is that Donald Rumsfeld played a key role in pushing the approval of aspartame through the FDA. Donald Rumsfeld became the chief executive officer of worldwide pharmaceutical giant G.D. Searle & Company (later bought out by Monsanto) in 1977, 12 years after aspartame was discovered. In 1981, after over 15 years of continual FDA disapproval of aspartame, Rumsfeld stated in a Searle sales meeting that he would use “political rather than scientific means” to finally get the FDA to approve the sweetener. That is just what happened, as aspartame was finally approved shortly after the beginning of the Reagan administration despite the huge objections of some in the scientific community.

Aspartame: What is it?

While it has a very sweet taste, the truth is that aspartame is much worse for you than sugar is.

Out of 90 independently-funded studies on aspartame, 83 of them found that the artificial sweetener causes one or more serious health problems.

Aspartame contains three very insidious components: methanol, phenylalanine, and aspartic acid. All three of these chemicals have each been shown to either stimulate brain cells to death, severely disrupt hormone balances in the brain or act as a dangerous nerve poison.

Aspartame is an NMDA receptor antagonist, which means that it inhibits the release of neurotransmitters that cause pain within the body. NMDA receptor antagonists are often used as a form of anesthesia for animals, but not on humans due to the fact that they often cause brain damage in rodents. The possible side effects of aspartame on humans include headaches, brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson’s disease, alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

The dangers of aspartame poisoning have been a well guarded secret since the 1980s. The research and history of aspartame is conclusive as a cause of illness and toxic reactions in the human body. Aspartame is a dangerous chemical food additive, and its use during pregnancy and by children is one of the greatest modern tragedies of all.

Aspartame is a man-made, high intensity, non-caloric sweetener, used extensively worldwide in over 5,000 products. When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in  ASPARTAME coverts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes  metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants.)

Methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis; thus, many people are being diagnosed with having multiple sclerosis in error. The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is. It is a slow silent killer. The EPA recently announced that there was an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus across the United States.

Why haven’t you heard about aspartame poisoning before? Partly because the diet industry is worth trillions of American dollars to corporations, and they want to protect their profits by keeping the truth behind aspartame’s dangers hidden from the public. When NutraSweet® was introduced for the ‘second’ time in 1981, a diet craze revolutionized America’s eating protocols and a well-oiled money machine was set into motion changing modern lifestyles.

A few of the many chronic illnesses that have been shown to be contributed to by long-term exposure to excitatory amino acid damage include:

Eye:

  • blindness in one or both eyes
  • decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision
  • pain in one or both eyes
  • decreased tears
  • trouble with contact lenses
  • bulging eyes

Ear:

  • tinnitus – ringing or buzzing sound
  • severe intolerance of noise
  • marked hearing impairment

Neurologic:

  • epileptic seizures
  • headaches, migraines and (some severe)
  • dizziness, unsteadiness, both
  • confusion, memory loss, both
  • severe drowsiness and sleepiness
  • paresthesia or numbness of the limbs
  • severe slurring of speech
  • severe hyperactivity and restless legs
  • atypical facial pain
  • severe tremors

Psychological/Psychiatric:

  • severe depression
  • irritability
  • aggression
  • anxiety
  • personality changes
  • insomnia
  • phobias

Chest:

  • palpitations, tachycardia
  • shortness of breath
  • recent high blood pressure

Gastrointestinal:

  • nausea
  • diarrhea, sometimes with blood in stools
  • abdominal pain
  • pain when swallowing

Skin and Allergies:

  • itching without a rash
  • lip and mouth reactions
  • hives
  • aggravated respiratory allergies such as asthma

Endocrine and Metabolic:

  • loss of control of diabetes
  • menstrual changes
  • marked thinning or loss of hair
  • marked weight loss
  • gradual weight gain
  • aggravated low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • severe PMS

Other:

  • frequency of voiding and burning during urination
  • excessive thirst, fluid retention, leg swelling, and bloating
  • increased susceptibility to infection

Additional Symptoms of Aspartame Toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all:

  • DEATH
  • irreversible brain damage
  • birth defects, including mental retardation
  • peptic ulcers
  • aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
  • hyperactivity in children
  • severe depression
  • aggressive behavior
  • suicidal tendencies

Aspartame may trigger, mimic, or cause the following illnesses:

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Epstein-Barr
  • Post-Polio Syndrome
  • Lyme Disease
  • Grave’s Disease
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • ALS
  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • EMS
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Mercury sensitivity from Amalgam fillings
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Lupus
  • non-Hodgkins
  • Lymphoma
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

These are not allergies or sensitivities, but diseases and disease syndromes. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because aspartame symptoms mock textbook ‘disease’ symptoms, such as Grave’s Disease.

Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. Therefore, it is typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests and on x-rays. Textbook disorders and diseases may actually be a toxic load as a result of aspartame poisoning.

Ever gone to the doctor with real, physical symptoms, but he/she can’t find the cause? Well, it’s probably your diet, your environment, or both.

What can you use instead of artificial sweeteners? Stevia is a healthy alternative to sugar and aspartame and can be found in health food stores and most grocery stores.
